I was in the same situation as you so I started studying Hinduism and was trying to find out why the Gurus even made a distinct religion. I'm not sure what the righ answer is, but just my morning thoughts. I personally would like to like to learn the full message of what our Gurus wanted us to learn, without political repurcussions. Inadvertently, (why I'm not a huge fan of sgpc), I think much of our Sikhi has been neutered in the process. However, at the same time, it seems it limits our understanding of authentic Sikhi and kind of 'caps' it. I think this is for fear of being labeled 'Hindu,' and I understand the reason to defend our religion. As I read and learn more about Sikhi, I realize much of the SGGS and Sikhi in general have very explicit references to things like Ramayan, Mahabharat and other indic things (Krisna, Ram, etc.).īased on what I've seen and been around during my lifetime (born and raised near Sac), most of this is discouraged, or not even talked about and crazily in some English translations completely edited out (especially avatar names - Lord is usually used).
